The peace dove is one of the most well-known symbols in the world and was invented by Pablo Picasso. Even as a child, Picasso had a strong emotional connection to doves, as his father painted the birds in their home. An early painting by Picasso, "Child with Dove" (1901), shows his identification with these animals, which he saw as weak and vulnerable. The fact that the dove became Picasso's symbol for vulnerability and a universal symbol for the suffering of women and children was influenced by the organization of the first World Peace Congress in 1949 and a gift from Henri Matisse and Louis Aragon.
Henri Matisse gave Picasso four large Milanese tufted doves. Picasso used one of them as a reference for a lithograph. In 1949, Louis Aragon visited his friend Picasso to select an image for the poster of the first World Peace Congress in Paris. He chose a lithograph with a realistic depiction of a white dove - "The Dove." Initially, the peace dove was associated with the left-wing peace movement. However, during the Cold War, it was linked by Western forces to the Soviet Union and Socialist Realism.
Nevertheless, Picasso created a new interpretation of the peace dove for each subsequent World Peace Congress in Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Vienna, Rome, and Moscow. The most famous of these is "The Flying Dove," a lithograph from July 9, 1950, which was used for the London and Sheffield Peace Congress. A year later, the combination of dove and olive branch became a symbol of peace when Paul Éluard published his poem "Le Visage de la Paix" (1951) with 29 drawings by Pablo Picasso. One illustration shows a face framed by a peace dove and an olive branch.
