Greg Hogan – Capturing Moments

“I take pictures. All the time. I love the adventure of finding something during the day, and also the night. I love the night sky, and I love finding the smallest details all around me.”

Greg Hogan believes in capturing moments.  Nothing is staged and his work is done with an immediacy of an iPhone. It’s a subtle contradiction that has a beautiful outcome. From a viewers point of view Hogan’s pictures look almost meticulously considered, while with the amazing ability of the modern camera phone. With a very serine and peaceful collection of photographs on Photocircle, Hogan has a dramatic eye for beautiful skies and mesmerizing landscapes.

How did you first discover your love of photography?

My mom has always been so good about capturing moments when I was growing up, this was before the digital camera age. So I have lots of old prints. I always have been drawn to capturing moments. Photography allows me to do that.

What’s the most important type of equipment for you?

My eye. Without it I would see nothing, sometimes I don’t have my camera with me or my equipment, but I always have that. In those moments I stop and I enjoy the moment and a mental picture is taken and saved. 

When you go on one of your travels, what do you take with you? Why?

My iPhone, which is what I take pictures with 90% of the time, its small easy to use and forces some creativity with its simple picture taking design. 

How do you feel inspired?

I look for inspiration in everything. The sky above and the dirt below and everything in between. I do not get to travel to a lot of exotic places, so I try to find the inspiration in the front yard or on the way to work.

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

There is a picture I took that is on the site called “Little Miss Red” what I love about this picture is the idea that in a world full of dirt, darkness, sadness, and bad things there is always beauty. No matter how small. The image is of ugly dead leaves, but in that dark backdrop is a beautiful red lady bug. I took it with my iPhone while walking to my car one morning.

Whose work has influenced you most?

Hmmm…..no photographer really. I don’t look at names, just images, but lets say God. God made all this around us. This planet and universe is his picture, and we take pictures of it.

What is the one thing you wish you knew before you started taking photos?

It’s not about the gear, don’t spent 1000’s of  $ on gear. Its not about the lens, or the camera.
