Over eight million people live in this large city. The capital of the United Kingdom is located on the Thames, in the south-east of England, and it is one of the world's most important financial and commercial centres. The city is also a cultural metropolis and abounds with world-class universities that attract year after year considerable numbers of international students. Furthermore, London is full of beautiful and eye-catching buildings and monuments, and it is often mentioned that a square kilometre consists of 100 different ages. For example, those who roam the Thames will come across both very old and very young architectural structures - and from time to time even less attractive remnants from the past decades.
