The Bauhaus, a school of art, design, and architecture, was founded in Weimar by Walter Gropius in 1919 and closed its doors as early as 1933. The Nazis saw the Bauhaus as a center for 'degenerate art'. Its ideas were considered too progressive and incompatible with their ideologies. Consequently, due to political pressure and repression against the school, the Bauhaus had to close its doors in 1933.
The Bauhaus aimed to unite art and craftsmanship and develop a new formal language for the modern world. It was characterized by an experimental atmosphere, in which various art forms such as painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic design, and craftsmanship were taught. With the closure of the Bauhaus in Weimar, the school moved to Dessau and later to Berlin. Renowned artists and teachers at the Bauhaus included Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Although the Bauhaus existed for only a short time, it had an enormous influence on modern art, architecture, and design worldwide.
