Matisse here, Matisse there, Matisse everywhere - Henri Emile Benoit Matisse really seems to be everywhere these days. Hardly any influencer can currently do without one, two or three copies of his (mostly late) work in their living room. And of course they’re not wrong to do that at all! The work of Henri Matisse is not only really nice to look at, the French painter was also one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Above all, however, he was himself an avant-gardist, a trendsetter - several times over! From his Fauvist work to his late gouache cut-outs, the “Papiér Découpés”, Matisse re-invented himself time and again.

The remarkable career of Henri Matisse, whose stylistic innovations (alongside those of Pablo Picasso) would profoundly change the course of modern art, spanned almost six and a half decades. His extensive oeuvre includes painting, drawing, sculpture, etchings, linocuts, and other printmaking techniques, as well as paper cut-outs and book illustrations. Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France and began to show an interest in art at an early age. After studying it, he discovered diverse artistic currents that coexisted or succeeded one another in the dynamic Parisian art scene, such as Neoclassicism, Realism, Impressionism, and Neo-Impressionism. He began to experiment with a variety of styles, ultimately creating his own visual language.

In the last decade of his long life, until 1951, Henri Matisse produced around 270 paper cut-outs, also known as Matisse Papier Découpés. After two serious operations in 1941, the artist was able to create them while sitting in bed or in a chair. So, during this time, the cut-outs became practically his only means of expression. Matisse cut shapes out of sheets of paper, which his assistants first colored with gouache. These were pinned in place and, upon completion, glued onto a white or multicolored background. According to Matisse, the gouache cut-outs combined the qualities of painting and drawing – form, color, and line.
In 1952, one of Matisse's most productive late years, he created many ambitious paper cut-outs, including his famous Blue Nude. Facing forward, with raised arms and breasts sticking out to the sides, the pose recalls his works of the 1920s. The simple but effective composition consists of six unconnected pieces of blue-painted paper, which seem to float in space. It represents one of about a dozen variations of the theme that Matisse created over a period of several months.
The beautiful Blue Nude, as well as many other Matisse Papier Découpés or Matisse Cut-Outs, as they are called in English, can be found at Photocircle.
